Rahab the betta

Rahab was hiding the first couple of weeks, sleeping near the filter, then we got him a betta log which he likes to go in and out. Bettas have loads of personality and Rahab is not any different. We found him in a community tank with other fish. He gets along with ember tetras quite well (they steal his food sometimes, though) and loves to search for food on the bottom which sometimes scares the pygmy cories (they get out of his way, basically). He is very outgoing and if he sees me going past the fish tank, he does his begging "dance", which means wiggling to get our attention. Sometimes it works but mostly it doesn´t.

Favourite hobby: begging for food

Yellow the kuhli loach

Yellow is a distinct striped kuhli loach. His stripes are not as full, hence the name! He loves digging and hanging himself upside on plants. Evening routine is to do a few laps around the perimeter. He is not bothered by shrimp and loves to hang out with his kuhli gang of goofballs (Skull, Dee, Dot, Dots and Little). Sometimes he sleeps at funny angles so it looks like he is dead on his side...

Fav hobby: hanging in weird positions

 Ember tetras

They loosely school sometimes, other times you can find them all separated in the corners. When it is feeding time, they all group up so the begging is more effective (and it works, most of the time). The leader is the dominant female, who will defend her personal space from others. Maybe Rahab taught them how to beg while we were gone. They took a while to warm up and recognize us, but they come over if we are near.

Fav hobby: hovering, begging for food

Rhys and Fiona the cockatoo cichlids

Rhys was brought in with a sneaker male at first, to which he flared up every time he was near him. Then we realized the mistake and next day we swapped him over for Fiona. Rhys seems to like Fiona and frequently displays his fins in full attention but sometimes ends up slapping her in the face with his tail to which she responds by quickly swimming away... Luckily, he leaves her alone most of the time so she has time to explore the tank on her own.

Fav hobby: showing his fins off to Fiona, chewing on sand

Dwarf neon rainbowfish

We got the 2 out of 3 males slightly beaten up, but their injuries are healing. Even females have had a few fights but it seems they sorted themselves out. These are super curious fish, aware of what is going on outside of the tank. They come to the glass a lot when I am near to have a look and gather when it is time for food.

Fav hobby: swimming around the tank really fast

Zebra loach gang

Zebras resemble cories but with kuhli personalities. Quite skittish but once they get to know you, they come out of their hiding more often. They love to sift through sand with their barbels, so make sure your tank has sand. I have found them sleeping in weird positions - one was nestled vertically in a shallow hole in the wood over night. One of mine looks like he is permanently sad due to his eye markings. They do get up to 10cm and best to avoid having cories with them. Pleco manages their temperament just fine, though.

Fav hobby: stuffing themselves in cramped places

Mel and Zeph the honey gourami pair

We got Mel first, but she was so scared of us, she was always hiding. Then we got her a male friend, Zeph, who we rescued from a tank where he was bullied by other male and female gouramis. Watching her interact with Zeph the first time was magical - they touched with their elongated fins and swam together. After few days, Zeph´s colours became vibrant and he tried to impress Mel (unsuccessfully, so far). Mel is a precious lady, she was super shy and took her the longest to get used to us. Now she even comes to the top when there´s feeding time. She loves her bloodworms!

Fav hobby: tasting plants

Sweet Tooth the clown pleco

This pleco is not too active during the day but sometimes comes out and has a nibble on the wood. I have caught him sleeping on his back a few times when he thought I am not watching. He will defend his wafers from intruders (because Rhys never has enough) but is still getting used to humans.

Fav hobby: sleeping in dark places
